Friday 5th - Fan Birds with Sandra Stigert

SEK 950.00

Discover a rare folk craft that has been passed down through generations – a tradition that continues to captivate with its elegance and simplicity.

In this workshop, you’ll learn to carve a traditional fan bird from start to finish – from raw wood to finished sculpture. Under the guidance of instructor Sandra Stigert, you’ll be introduced to the techniques, tools, stories and historical roots of this nearly forgotten art form.

Fan birds originated in Russia and spread across Europe during the 19th century, carried by skilled craftspeople. Each bird is carved from a single piece of wood, with delicate shavings fanned out to form wings and tail. In Sweden, these birds have been known as takfågel, julduva or lyckofågel – symbols of peace, joy and good fortune.

You’ll be working from Sandra’s own templates, learning step by step how to select the right wood, use specialized tools, and master the final fanning technique that brings the bird to life. We use a special drawknife that makes the process accessible even for beginners, while also offering depth and challenge for experienced carvers.

All materials and tools are provided. The course is suitable for both complete beginners and those with previous experience in woodworking or craft.
