Make your own stool out of green and fresh ash wood!

The ash used for the stools is felled and cut in the southern part of Östergötland. We begin the course by cutting and cleaving blanks for the seat rails, rungs, and legs. From there, we carve and shape each piece in preparation for the parts to dry overnight.

On the second day, we will shape the legs and assemble the stool. The final stage is seat weaving, using a highly durable Danish paper cord. This process takes time and patience, but results in a strong and comfortable seat.

Throughout the course we will use a range of traditional hand tools, including saw, froe, mallet, axe, chopping block, shave horse, drawknife, tenon cutter, drills, sloyd knife, clamps, and weaving accessories.

Course Schedule:

  • START: Thursday afternoon at 2pm

  • All day Friday

  • Continues through Saturday morning until lunch time around 1pm.

    *There is a high chance that students will have to finish the weaving of their seats after the end of class.

No prior experience needed. Tho any woodworking experience is not required it will support your process.

Minimum age: 16 years old

Material costs: 400-500sek to be paid directly to Bernt Rudholm. This is mainly to cover the cost of the Danish cord used for weaving the seat.

If you have your own draw knife, carving knife please bring them. All other tools and materials will be provided.

If language is a barrier we are confident you will learn even if you speak or understand broken English. So much of the learning depends on seeing, feeling, and hearing the sounds as well.
