Thurs 4th PM, Fri 5th AM & Saturday 6th - Bentwood Boxes with Helena Åberg

SEK 1,800.00

Bentwood technique is an old technique for making boxes, trays and vessels for storage and transport. The earliest known bentwood vessels date back to the Bronze Age. The technique has been very common in Sweden and there are some really old bentwood boxes preserved.

During this workshop, you will make smaller boxes or trays using the bentwood technique. We mainly use wood from pine or willow. You will split the thin board with hand tools and work them to the right dimensions. The thin boards are then soaked and bent into a round or oval shape, either by freehand or using a template. The bent wood is joined with birch or spruce roots. You will then make a bottom that fits in and possibly a lid.

You will gain a good insight into how wood works by splitting wood. You will also gain experience of various sharp hand tools, such as a travisher and a drawknife, as well as knowledge of bending wood and sewing with roots. And lastly we will alos cover how the technology and objects have been used historically.
